70/365 Danny
Bar conversation reveals Danny's good-ol'-boy demeanor camouflages a penchant for Kipling and cooking. We discover he'd been pals with Jimmy, my high school boyfriend, and start playing "What about...?" We stall at Mike. Nothing sours reminiscing's sweet bouquet like the unmistakable scent of mortality.

This is one of my favorites. You caught the "essence" of him so well. "good-ol'-boy demeanor camouflages a penchant for Kipling and cooking"... what a great description! It is always fun to realize what a small world we live in and listening to history being relived. Has Jimmy been told about x365?
isn't it funny how you can pick up on an artist just by reading their writing? love it!
again, you ended with a morsel that was only four words long, ("unmistakable scent of mortality"), but speaks volumes
I could practically hear the conversational brakes screeching to a halt, followed by that fumbling awkward ache of reaching for some sort of comfort in the memories ... this stuff is goooood
