Joanne’s been town clerk since the earth was formed. She listens as you speak and her lips twist into a discrete little smile that hints she’s got some dirt on everyone in town and at that moment is recalling what she’s got on you.

Joanne sounds like someone who would be in To Kill a Mockingbird, but with a name like Mabel or Cora-Sue.
What a charmer. I didn't know any of those in NYC, but I've met a few since. Perfect description.
Why don't you tell her about this blog idea? She'd have lots of people to write about...
this was great ... kind of makes you want to squint your eyes and glare at her a little bit
